Biographical History
Joseph Sutton (1838-1903) was born in Portage County, Ohio, and came to Hudson Township, LaPorte County Indiana in 1855. In May 1861 he enlisted in Company C of the 17th Indiana Infantry Volunteers which formed part of Wilder's Brigade serving in Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia and taking part in the battles of Shiloh, Perrysville, Chickamauga and the sieges of Knoxville and Atlanta. In September 1861 Sutton was promoted to sergeant and was subsequently promoted to 2nd lieutenant in April 1864 and handled the company's quartermaster duties. Sutton returned to LaPorte County after the war and was a farmer. In December 1867 he married Emma Salaway and they produced four children. Sutton was active in the G.A.R. and was a founder and post commander of Post # 115 of New Carlisle, St. Joseph County, Indiana.
