Biographical History

Caroline Lavinia Scott Harrison (b. Oct. 1, 1832, Oxford, OH–d. Oct. 25, 1892, Washington, DC) was the daughter of John Witherspoon Scott, a professor and minister. She met her husband, Benjamin Harrison who was a student of her father and later President of the United States; they were married on October 20, 1853. They had two children: Russell Benjamin Harrison and Mary Scott McKee. As First Lady, she raised the first Christmas tree, started other art classes for women at the White House. Harrison helped found the Daughters of American Revolution, serving as its first President General. She died while husband was still president; after her death her daughter became the de facto First Lady.
