Born in Kentucky. Bachelor's degree from Vanderbilt University in 1882, law degree from the University of Virginia in 1884. Private law practice in Nashville until 1903; Justice Department posts including Attorney General until appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1914.
McReynolds practiced law in Nashville Tennessee, and served as U.S. Attorney General (1913-1914) and Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court (1914-1941).
