Biographical History
The Delaware State Chamber of Commerce was organized in Wilmington in 1913 in order to promote the interests of the Delaware business community. It was affiliated with the national Chamber of Commerce which was organized in Washington in 1912 and was the successor to the Wilmington Board of Trade which traced its origins to 1865. The business of the Chamber of Commerce has always been conducted through the voluntary service of its members acting in functional sections, divisions and committees. These sections change to reflect the changing structures and concerns of the association. They can however be described in broad terms as representing the several trades, industries and services of the state; particular municipal and state projects (bridge and road building, street signage, a paid fire department); state and federal laws; employee benefits; housing; arts and tourism.
