Biographical History
James H. Hilton, a native of North Carolina, received his B.S. (1923) in animal husbandry from Iowa State College (University); his M.S. (1937) from the University of Wisconsin; and was awarded a doctorate degree (1945) from Purdue University. He held a wide variety of positions, including Iowa county agent (1923-1926); Head of Dairy Production and Research at Purdue (1939-1945); and Head of Animal Husbandry (1945-1948) and Dean of Agriculture (1948-1953) at North Carolina State. In 1953, he was named President of Iowa State College (University). During his time at Iowa State, Hilton expanded research, course offerings, and public service programs, and also oversaw the change from College to University (1959). After his retirement, Dr. Hilton was named the university's first director of development.
