Biographical History

Everett McKinley Dirksen (b. Jan. 4, 1896, Pekin, Ill.-d. Sept. 7, 1969, Washington, D.C.), a U.S. Representative and U.S. Senator from Illinois, served overseas first as a private and later as a second lieutenant of Field Artillery during the First World War. He later attended the University of Minnesota College of Law and was admitted to the bar in 1936. Mr. Dirksen was elected as a Republican to the U.S. Congress, serving eight terms from 1933 to 1949, and to the U.S. Senate, serving from his election in 1950 to his death in 1969. He was the Republican whip from 1957 to 1959, and minority leader from 1959 to 1969.
