Biographical History
Stanley Dunbar Embick (1877-1957) was born in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He graduated from West Point in 1899 and commissioned in the Coast Artillery Corps. From 1917 to 1918, he served as chief of staff of the American section on the Supreme War Council at Versailles, France. He then was a delegate to the Paris peace conference. From 1921 to 1923, he taught at the Army War College. He made brigadier general in 1930 and became commandant of the Coast Artillery School. Between 1932 and 1935, he commanded harbor defenses at Manila. He made major general in May 1936. From 1938 to 1940, he was commanding general of IV Corps Area, then Third Army. He rose to lieutenant general in August 1939. From 1940, he sat on the Joint Defense Board until his retirement in January 1941. The Army recalled him to active duty in February 1941. He again served on the Joint Defense Board. In 1942 he left to serve with the Joint Chiefs of Staff, until 1945. At the same time, he was chairman of the Inter-American Defense Board, until 1946. His decorations included two Distinguished Service Medals.
