Arvilla School District (Arvilla, N.D.)

In 1881, the courses taught at the Orange School building, located 1 1/2 miles west of Arvilla, North Dakota, were writing, reading, arithmetic, and geography. The following year, the one room schoolhouse was moved to Arvilla where it remained until being destroyed by fire in 1902. In 1903, a new schoolhouse was built for the sum of $3,769 and was large enough to accommodate 3 teachers. By 1918, high school courses were offered to students and by 1931, high school coursework had extended to four years. In 1936, the Arvilla school district decided it was cheaper to transport students to Larimore than to continue providing students with high school classes. The following year, a law passed allowing the school district to continue the practice and within two years, 26 students were being transported to Larimore to take high school coursework.
