Richard Garfield Weede (b. Sept. 26, 1911, Sterling, Kan.-d. Oct. 22, 1985, Portsmouth, Va.), U.S. Marine Corps officer, graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1935. He served on Guam prior to the outbreak of World War II when he joined the 2nd Defense Battalion on American Samoa. He remained in the Pacific throughout the War, serving as commander, 5-Inch Artillery Group on Tarawa; battalion commander, 2nd Marine Division on Saipan; and commander, 2nd Battalion, 10th Marines. In 1951 he joined the 1st Marine Division in Korea serving in combat as commander, 5th Marines, and later as chief of staff, 1st Marine Division. In 1959 General Weede assumed command of the 1st Marine Brigade in Hawaii, and in 1962 became chief of staff, U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam in Saigon. From 1965 to 1967, he served as Director of Personnel, Marine HQ, and then assumed duty as commanding general, Fleet Marine Force, Atlantic, and commanding general, II Marine Expeditionary Force, until his retirement.
