Biographical History
Missionary, printer for the Church Missionary Society, naturalist, explorer, politician. Arrived in New Zealand in 1834, produced first printed work in 1835. Ordained as Deacon in 1844 and began missionary work in Hawkes Bay. Published papers on natural history and Maori lore.
W. Colenso, 1811-1899, missionary and botanist, arrived at Paihia, Bay of Islands, New Zealand in Dec. 1834 and owed much of his systematic training in botany to Allan Cunningham who visited Paihia in 1838. He made journeys to Bay of Plenty and East Coast districts of New Zealand in 1838, in 1839 travelled overland to Cape Reinga and in 1841-1842 to the East Coast, Urewera and Waikato districts.
