Biographical History
American essayist and critic.
Edwin Percy Whipple was an influential 19th century American literary critic and lecturer. A prolific reader, he worked at several disparate jobs while publishing critical essays in diverse periodicals. He gained the reputation as one of the most important young critics of his generation, and his approach to understanding authors through their writing was popular. Although certain deficiencies and oversights have obscured his contributions, he was a real and vital force in 19th century American literature.
