Biographical History

Glasgow University Assistants' Club was formed at the University of Glasgow, Scotland in 1888. The club was formed "for the promotion of Social Intercourse among assistants to Professors in the University". The first meeting was held in March 1888 with a membership of 27. The club was to meet 3 times a year and also held excursions, suppers and meetings to discuss matters of importance to its members. In 1897 the Glasgow University Lecturers' & Assistants' Club was formed to take over the Glasgow University Assistants' Club which had lapsed in 1893. This club gave lectures and provided socials for its members at the University Club on Bath Street, Glasgow. In 1899 the club became the Glasgow University Staff Club. The club held annual dinners and held meetings to discuss pertinent issues to the club's members. In 1901, it petitioned the University Court for a dedicated staff common room. The last annual dinner was held in 1914 and the club ceased during the 1914-1918 World War. The Club never reformed following the war and its functions, books and funds were transferred to the Glasgow branch of the Association of University Teachers (AUT) in 1923 and officially closed.
