Biographical History

Hiram Farrand, resident of Newark, N.J. enrolled in Company F of the 1st New York Volunteer Engineers Regiment in Sept. 1861. In October he was commissioned the 2nd Lieutenant, and in Feb. 1862 promoted to First Lieutenant of Co. E. In Dec. 21, 1863 he was appointed acting regimental adjutant. In March 1864 Farrand was commissioned Captain of Co. D. During his service, he took part in battles of Hilton Head, Secessionville, Coosawatchie River, Carlton and Frampton Plantations, Morris Island, siege of Battery Wagner, Charleston, and Fort Sumter. Wounded during the action at Bermuda Hundred (Va.), he spent a month at the General Hospital in Chesapeake in 1864. He was mustered out on Dec. 12, 1864 in Varina, Va.
