Biographical History
Merrick worked as a lawyer in Ohio and Louisiana. He set up his law practice in Clinton, La. in 1838, three years after expressing to his mother that he wished to move to the South because "more money can be made than it is said dull northern men can dream of." He was elected district judge and served as chief justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court, 1855-1865. He married Caroline Elizabeth Thomas of Cottage Hall Plantation, East Feliciana Parish, and they had four children, including son Edwin Thomas Jr., who joined his father in the law practice Merrick & Merrick, after the Civil War.
