Novelist, poet, critique, editor, translator, lecturer and education, José Antonio Villarreal was born July 30, 1924 in Los Angeles, California.

Known for a series of novels, but particularly for his first novel Pocho; many regard him as the founder of Latino/a literature; Taught: University of Colorado, Boulder (1971-72), University of Texas at El Paso (1972-1973), Santa Clara University (1975-1976), Texas A & I University, Laredo, Texas (1976), University of the Americas, Mexico (1977-1978), Centro de Estudios Universitarios, San Angel, Mexico (Summer 1977), American School Foundation. Mexico City (1977-1982), California State University, Los Angeles (1985-1986), Texas State Technical College, McAllen, Texas (1991-1992), College of the Siskiyous, Weed California (1992-1994); received his Doctor of Humane Letters, Houston International University, Houston, Texas (1989).
