Biographical History
Eugene "Gene" Anderson was born 9 March 1944 in Georgia. He moved to Wichita, Kansas in 1951 where he worked as a brakeman for the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad. In 1972, Anderson was elected to the Kansas State House of Representatives from the 83rd District; he proceeded to serve in that position for two terms (until 1976). He then served as Chairman of the Kansas Civil Rights Commission from 1979-1983. He also worked as district-aide to Congressman Dan Glickman. In 1985, Anderson returned to elected office, serving as State Senator for the 29th District until he resigned from office in November 1991.
Anderson was involved in a number of community organizations including the Northeast Optimists, the Noah Wells Masonic Lodge, and Calvary Baptist Church. As a legislator, he was secretary for the Kansas Black Democratic Caucus. Anderson married Mamie Jewell Sapp; the couple has three children.
