Biographical History
Edward Clodd was an English banker, writer, anthropologist and folklorist.
Edward Clodd was a banker and anthropologist who wrote several popular treatises in support of Charles Darwin's theories. Born in Margate, Clodd secured work as a clerk during a visit to London, and had a long career with the London Joint Stock Bank. When not at work, he applied himself to his education, reading and attending lectures, and began writing for scientific journals. He published The Childhood of the World, a primer on evolutionary anthropology, in 1873, and Story of Creation in 1888. An extremely popular and social person, Clodd belonged to numerous clubs, and was on friendly terms with many members of London's literary society, including Thomas Hardy, William Butler Yeats, and Grant Allen, among many others.
