Biographical History
Reared in St. Louis, Missouri, Sheila Michaels worked for both the Congress of Racial Equality and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in Jackson, Mississippi, around 1962. During Freedom Summer in 1964, she was project manager of the Mississippi Council of Federated Organizations' Hattiesburg Project.
Sheila Michaels was suspended from the College of William and Mary for her political and racial opinions while on the school newspaper's board. During the early 1960s, she worked for CORE and SNCC in Jackson, Mississippi. In 1964, she became the COFO project manager in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. She conducted an oral history of the Congress of Racial Equality for Columbia University.
