The Lutheran Missionary was a publication of the Mission Auxiliary of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Iowa and Other States (Iowa Synod). It started after the auxiliary decided it needed an English-language publication to reach a larger audience within the church. The first issue appeared January 1921. The magazine was published monthly at Wartburg Publishing House, 2018 Chicago Avenue, Chicago, Illinois. Its editor was the Rev. Georg J. Zeilinger and its business manager was the Rev. Carl Taubert. Both the men remained in these positions throughout the time the Iowa Synod published this magazine and continued to do so after responsibility was transferred to the newly-created American Lutheran Church in 1931. Each issue contained news about mission work in which the Iowa Synod was involved or supported; mission study material; mission field statistics and reports; and also general articles publicizing mission work and opportunities for service within the church. With the January 1929 issue, the magazine introduced a new department devoted to news of Iowa Synod home mission efforts.
