Harold Keith was born April 8, 1903, in Lambert, Oklahoma. His main interest was sports, and for many years he was sports publicity director at the U. of Oklahoma in Norman. He fit his writing in around his U. of O. work schedule. Most of his books for young people deal with sport themes, and are noted for their accuracy and attention to detail. His book Rifles for Watie won the Newbery Medal for 1958 and the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award for 1964. He has also won several other awards.
