McMillan, James Winning, 1825-1903
Variant namesBorn in Clark County, Ky., James W. McMillan fought in the Mexican War as a sergeant of the 4th Illinois Infantry and later as a private in a battalion of Louisiana volunteers. In 1861 he was made colonel of the 21st Indiana Volunteer Infantry, which took part in General Benjamin F. Butler's occupation of New Orleans, La., and aided in the defense of Baton Rouge against the attack by General John C. Breckinridge. Promoted to brigadier general in 1862, he commanded a brigade in the Red River Expedition. In 1865 he was brevetted Major General. After the war he served as a member of the Board of Review of the Pension Bureau in Washington, D.C., until his death in 1903.
