Elizabeth "Betsy" Hoffman received a B.A. (1968) in History from Smith College; an M.A. (1969) and Ph. D (1972 from the University of Pennsylvania; and a Ph. D (1979) in Economics from the California Institute of Technology. She has been employed as an Assistant Professor in History and Economics at the University of Florida, Northwestern University, and Purdue University.

She was the Dean of Liberal Arts (1993-1997) at Iowa State University, and is currently employed by the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Hoffman was a member of the Ames Noon Rotary Club, the Ames Chamber of Commerce, the Story County/National Women's Political Caucus, and the League of Women Voters of Ames (Iowa).
