It is assumed that this collection was created by Muriel Straithmore as most of the correspondence in the collection is connected to her. Straithmore was an artist/writer living in New York in the 1920s and 1930s. She was born on October 8, 1862, in Maine and died on October 10, 1945, in Alameda, California. Her publication credits include illustrations in Women at Home and Table Talk magazines. Her connection to Col. House in not known.
Captain James B. Gillett was born in Austin, Texas on November 4, 1854. In 1875 he joined the Texas Rangers, Daniel Webster Roberts's Company D Frontier Battalion, and served for six years. His service for the Rangers was the subject of his book. After leaving the Rangers, he worked as rancher in various parts of Texas and New Mexico before retiring to Marfa, Texas. He died on June 11, 1937.
