Christopher Whatley was educated at the University of Strathclyde. He joined the History Department at Dundee University in 1979. After a period at the University of St Andrews he returned to Dundee in 1992. He was awarded the Bonar Chair of Modern History in 2000 and became Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences in 2002. Primarily a Scottish Historian Chris Whatley specialises in eighteenth century social and economic history. He has published several books and articles and has contributed to a number of television and radio programmes. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, Whatley was elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society in 1988.
