The words "Brightest and best of the sons" were written by Bishop Reginald Heber. Heber originally wrote this hymn for the Feast of the Epiphany, January 6. It was first published in the Christian Observer in 1811, but did not appear in hymnals until after Heber's death. The music, "Morning Star," was composed by James Proctor Harding, 1892.--Cf.
