Riddell, J. H., Mrs., 1832-1906
Variant namesAuthor Charlotte Riddell was born in Ireland, and later emigrated to London. She began publishing novels and stories before her marriage, but debts incurred by her husband established her as the household's primary earner, and the ensuing pressure increased her literary output, possibly at the expense of quality. Remembered primarily for stories of the supernatural, she was also gifted at describing London's business and professional life.
