Historian. A. B., 1938, Amherst College; M. A., 1939, Ph. D., 1942, Harvard University. Established new field of history: the history of technology. He was the principal founder of the Society for the History of Technology (SHOT), founding editor (1959-1981) of its quarterly journal, Technology and Culture, and served as SHOT Secretary (1959-1974) and President (1983-1984).
