Gardner, Archibald, 1815-1902
Variant namesArchibald Gardner (1815-1902) was born in Kilsyth, Scotland, and emigrated to Ontario, Canada, in 1822. He started a grist mill and saw mill in Alvinston, Ontario, but left Canada in 1846 after joining the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He and other Mormons fleeing Canada met with American Mormons at Winter Quarters, Nebraska, and arrived in Salt Lake City in 1847. Gardner established numerous mills in the Salt Lake Valley and was also active in mining endeavors. He served in the Utah Territorial Legislature from 1878-1882. Anti-polygamy laws forced Gardner to leave Utah and he lived for some time in Wyoming, although he eventually returned to Salt Lake City, where he died in 1902.
