"This volume [sic] is composed of the collection of Isaac Titsingh, governor of Batavia and council extraordinary of Netherlands India.
The first papers consist of a defense of the conduct of Isaac Titsingh in his control of the commerce of the Netherlands East India Company. The later papers deal chiefly with the plans for the Dutch embassy to China, under Isaac Titsingh as ambassador, during the years 1794 and 1795"--Prefatory note, v.1.
"The translations of the edicts of the Emperor of China are especially valuable, as they treat of the English embassy under Lord Macartney and give the emperor's reasons for not consenting to the English establishment at Pekin, but insisting on its remaining at Canton and Macao. The edicts throughout are friendly in tone and refute the calumnies of interested persons on the supposed failure of the embassy"--Prefatory note, v.1.
