W.S. Graham was a Scottish poet associated with the neo-romantic poets. Born in Greenock, he studied engineering at Stow College and literature at Newbattle Abbey College, publishing his first book of poetry in 1942. Several books followed in short order, but the reception of his 1954 collection, The Nightfishing, caused him to withdraw until 1970. Recognition has come belatedly, but Graham's work is enjoying a renaissance.
