Henrietta Bowdler was an English author and poet. She was born into a literary family, and published numerous religious poems, essays, and even sermons. She and her brother Thomas published the famous Family Shakespeare, purging from the text words and expressions they felt were unfit to be read aloud in a family setting--thus coining the expression, to Bowdlerize.
