The Screen Cartoonists, Local 852 was first associated in 1936-37 with the Brotherhood of Painters, Decorators, and Paperhangers of America; it was chartered by AFL on November 29, 1939. The Local signed its first contract in 1940 with MGM and successfully negotiated a bargaining agreement with Disney Studios August 1941. In 1943 an eastern division of the union was formed in New York City. In late 1950 the union withdrew from the Brotherhood and became an independent union, the Screen Cartoonists Guild. The Guild was one of two unions competing for membership of the animation cartoonists; the other was the Motion Picture Screen cartoonists, Local 839, of the International Alliance of Theatrical State Employees (I.A.T.S.E.). In July, 1969 the Guild was affiliated with Teamsters Local 986. Selby Daley (Kelly) was the Guild's last president.
