Hide Profile

The Governor's Committee to Review State Policy for Funding Maryland's Chesapeake Fisheries was formed by the governor in 1989. The committee's ten members reviewed the watermen's compensation, freshwater hatchery, and oyster repletion programs, evaluating the condition of the state's fisheries, Department of Natural Resources' management, and the costs and returns of these programs to the state economy. The committee's recommendations included discontinuing the watermen's compensation program; continuing the freshwater hatchery program and the oyster repletion program; encouraging and developing public and private fisheries; increasing license fees and oyster taxes; promoting scientific management in assessing oyster stocks, monitoring production, and evaluating oyster bed quality;

removing legal barriers to aquaculture; and intensifying enforcement of laws and standards.

The Governor's Committee to Review State Policy for Funding Maryland's Chesapeake Fisheries submitted its final report in September 1990.
