Robert John Sholl (1819-1886) entered the public service after his arrival in Western Australia in 1840, serving first at Bunbury before being made first Government Resident for the North in 1865. He was sent to Camden Harbour to take charge of the new settlement there. When the settlement at Camden Harbour failed, Sholl, with a handful of settlers, moved his headquarters to Roebourne in November 1865.
