Biographical Note

Gregory Ain was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on March 28, 1908. His family moved to Los Angeles in 1911. He attended University of California, Los Angeles, and went on to study architecture at the University of Southern California from which he graduated in 1927. He worked first in the Los Angeles office of B. Marcus Pitman and later, in the early 1930s, he worked with Richard J. Neutra. From 1930 through 1935 he was an "Associate/Collaborator" with Neutra. He began his independent architectural practice in 1935 and in 1940 received a Guggenheim Foundation grant to study low-cost housing. In the post-World War II years he was considered to be one of the principal exponents of modern domestic architecture in the U. S. In the 1960s he became the Dean of the School of Architecture at Pennsylvania State University, but later returned to his practice in Southern California.
