Radola Gajda (born Rudolf Geidl) (b. Feb. 14, 1892, Austria-Hungary-d. April 15, 1948, Prague, Czechoslovakia) was a Czech military commander and politician. At the start of World War I, he served in the Austro-Hungarian Army and was taken prisoner in Bosnia (1915); but after his capture he changed sides and was commissioned a captain in the Montenegrin Army, pretending to be a physician. He then joined a Serbian battalion followed by the Czechoslovak Legions, quickly rising in the military hierarchy. Sympathetic to Italian Fascism, he was forced to retire from the military and turned to politics, taking part in the founding of the National Fascist Community. During the Nazi occupation of Czech lands he abandoned politics. At the end of World War II, Gajda was imprisoned by the Russians and tried for “propagation of Fascism and Nazism,” served two years, and died shortly thereafter.
