Salmon Portland Chase (1808-1873) was born in 1808 in Cornish, New Hampshire. After being admitted to the bar in 1830, Chase moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, and began his legal and political career. In 1856, he became Ohio's first Republican governor. After the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860, Chase was appointed to the Cabinet as secretary of the treasury. In 1864, Lincoln appointed Chase as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. In 1868, Chase abandoned the Republican Party and unsuccessfully sought the Democratic nomination for president. He was aided in his campaign by his wealthy daughter, Katherine Chase Sprague (1840-1899), who was known as one of Washington's most lavish hostesses. Chase died on May 7, 1873, at the age of sixty five.

Thomas D. Jones (d. 1881) was a 19th-century American sculptor who also did the marble portrait of Abraham Lincoln in the Ohio Statehouse.
