Born in England, Archbishop Strong was ordained an Anglican minister in 1923 and served until 1936 in poverty stricken North England industrial parishes. He was Bishop of New Guinea from 1936-1963, remaining in the territory throughout the war. In 1963 he was enthroned Archbishop of Brisbane and in 1966 he was elected Primate of Australia. He retired in 1970.
