The Jane R. Hanks collection consists of Jane and Lucien Hanks' original notes, transcripts, manuscript drafts and audiovisual materials from their field research, primarily focusing on work in Thailand spanning the 1950s-1970s. Some field notes, interviews and photographs originating with other anthropologists are also present, especially in the Bang Chan materials. The collection documents Thai rituals and ceremonies (marriage, ordination and cremation), agriculture, diet, family, gender and group dynamics, and other topics. Films in the collection mainly document daily life, rituals, performances and festivals in Thai cities and villages where the Hanks researched. Audio recordings, some not produced by the Hanks, feature mostly Thai and Native American music.
