He became an artist, studied at the Cowles Art School in Boston, the Art Students League in New York City, and in Taos with Ernest Blumenschein and Leon Gaspard. He illustrated for Harpers Weekly, Scribners, and National Sportsman. He permanently relocated to Taos in 1914 and became a western illustrator and painter. The Stark Museum of Art in Orange, Texas holds the largest collection of Dunton paintings and illustrations.
