Paine, E. A. (Eleazar A.), 1815-1882
Variant namesPaine, a native of Ohio and a graduate of West Point, was a Monmouth, Illinois lawyer until he became colonel of the 9th Illinois Infantry on July 26, 1861. He was appointed brigadier general on September 3, 1861 and commanded troops in various parts of the western theater, especially guarding railroads. He resigned April 5, 1865 and returned to his law practice.
