American artist, the youngest of the original artists of the Abstract Expressionist movement. His work was first shown at Peggy Guggenheim's Art of This Century gallery in 1945 and often included with paintings of Jackson Pollock, Robert Motherwell, Mark Rothko, and others in influential exhibitions thereafter.
