Sir James Gobbo was born in Australia of Italian parents and spent part of his childhood in Italy. He has been a Rhodes Scholar, a barrister, Judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria, 1978-1994, and Governor of Victoria, 1997-2000. In addition, his career has included government positions and activities relating to immigration reform and multicultural affairs, the Australian honours system, hospital administration and philanthropy. Amongst the honours awarded to Gobbo are Knight Bachelor (1981), Companion (AC) of the Order of Australia (1993), Knight of Grace of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem (KStJ 1997), the Centenary Medal in 2001 and Knight of Malta.
