Alexander Maconochie was born in February 1787 in Edinburgh. He joined the Royal Navy in 1805 serving in the West Indies. He retired as Captain in 1855. Maconochie accompanied Sir John Franklin to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) as private secretary but was dismissed in 1838. He served a superintendent of the penal colony on Norfolk Island between 1840-1844. He died in Morden Surrey in October 1860
