Born on August 18, 1928, in Keokuk, Iowa, James G. Witte, Jr., earned his A.B. degree in economics from Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, before attending Indiana University. He received his Master of Arts in economics from IU in September 1954 and his Ph.D. in 1956. Witte spent three years teaching at Ohio University and two years teaching at the University of Pittsburgh. In 1961, Witte returned to Indiana University as an associate professor of economics. He was promoted to full professor in 1967.

Dr. Witte was a member of Phi Gamma Delta and Phi Bet Kappa fraternities; the St. Paul’s Catholic Center, and several professional economic associations, including the American Economic Association, Atlantic Economic Association, and the Midwest Economic Association. Witte was recognized during his brief career for his vast output of scholarly work on the topic of Keynesian economic policy, employment, and international economic policy. He died on July 17, 1977, in Bloomington, Indiana.
