Spencer was born in 1764 in Buckingham County, Virginia, but moved to Prince Edward County while young. Served as a Methodist circuit rider, 1789-1797, in Virginia and North Carolina. Married Mary Newbill. Taught school in Prince Edward County. Moved to Lunenburg County in 1804.
