Lemuel Mathewson (b. March 29, 1899, Bath, N.Y.-d. Feb. 26, 1970), U.S. Army officer, received his commission in the infantry from West Point in 1922. He served with the 31st Infantry in the Philippines and was an instructor at the Academy for five years. He was assigned to the War Department General Staff in the early period of World War II and served as an Aide to President Roosevelt in 1943 and 1944. Later in the War, he was assistant commander, 7th Corps Artillery, and commanding general, XVIII Airborne Corps Artillery. Post-War assignments included chief of staff, Caribbean Defense Command, and commanding general, 11th Airborne Division Artillery. During the 1950s, General Mathewson was commanding general, Berlin Command; director of the joint staff, Joint Chiefs of Staff; and commanding general, V Corps and 6th Army. He retired in 1958.
