Zogbaum, Rufus Fairchild, 1849-1925
Variant namesRufus Fairchild Zogbaum (1849-1925) was an artist and illustrator known for his western and military subjects. He was born in Charleston, South Carolina on August 28, 1849, and studied at the Art Students League in New York City from 1878-1879 before traveling in the Western U.S. to paint Indians and life in the U.S. Army. His works appeared in "Harper's Weekly" from 1885-1890, and he illustrated Western fiction. He was one of the first artists to gain inspiration from the figure of the cowboy. He died in New York City on October 22, 1925.

Rufus F. Zogbaum was an artist and illustrator known for his western and military subjects. He was born in Charleston, South Carolina, August 28, 1849, and attended the Art Student’s League in New York City in 1878 and 1879, afterwards traveling to Paris to continue his studies in Europe. In 1884 he accompanied the 2nd U.S. Cavalry through Montana and Idaho as a correspondent and illustrator for Harper’s Magazine . He sent numerous other articles and illustrations to Harper’s and other periodicals regarding the west between 1886 and 1890, and he was among the first artists to draw inspiration from the figure of the cowboy. During and after the Spanish-American War he turned primarily to the military and especially to the navy for his subjects. Zogbaum died in New York City on October 22, 1925.
