Atmospheric physicist and Fellow of the Royal Society. Educated at Cambridge University. Cavendish Laboratory (1919-1924); Wheatstone Professor of Physics at King's College, London (1924-1936); headied an expedition to Tromsö in northern Norway as part of the program of observations scheduled for the Second International Polar Year (1932). President of the International Union of Scientific Radio (1934-1952). Jacksonian Chair of Natural Philosophy at Cambridge (1936). Committee for the Scientific Survey of Air Defense (1936). Secretary to the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (1938-1948). Principal of Edinburgh University (1948-1965). He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1947 for his investigations into the ionosphere.
