Willard Drake Johnson was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1859. He graduated from Yale University, and joined the U.S. Geological Survey in 1879. He worked for USGS until 1913, performing numerous topographical surveys throughout the United States. His transfer to the U.S. Forest Service in 1913 was unsuccessful. He patented the Johnson tripod head in 1887. Johnson died in Washington, D.C. in 1917.
